The Library Director search is temporarily suspended due to COVID-19

The City of Olathe, Kansas, seeks a dynamic leader to serve as Library Director of the Olathe Public Library. The position, reporting to the City Manager, is an outstanding opportunity to lead a forward-focused library that embraces the community it serves. This opening is due to the retirement of the current director.

The library provides service to over 142,000 residents of the City of Olathe.
Olathe recently opened a state of the art library for its Indian Creek Branch and plans are being made for a new downtown library as well.

Olathe, the county seat of Johnson County, is the fourth most populous city in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. Olathe offers a high quality of life while also providing the convenience of easy access to the larger Kansas City Metro region.

The City of Olathe, an award winning organization, is known for being a customer focused, data driven and values based organization. The City Council recently adopted the Olathe 2040 Strategic Plan and uses performance measures and citizen surveys to ensure they are always setting the standard for excellence in public service.

About the Opportunity

The successful candidate will be a leader who can inspire staff, encourage teamwork and bring new ideas to the library. This individual should be visionary, aware of the needs of the community served by the library but also willing to take the next steps to ensure that the library continues to remain relevant, resilient and a leader in public library services.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • An understanding of current and emerging trends in library operations including customer service, technology and programming
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to inspire the staff, board and community
  • Intellectual curiosity and openness to new ideas, coupled with good business sense
  • A passion for librarianship with a clear vision of the future
Additional Requirements and Qualifications
  • Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited school
  • Experience in a high-level public library leadership role with financial responsibilities

Salary mid-point $122,191 and is negotiable based on experience. Excellent benefits. Establishment of residency in the City of Olathe may be required. Relocation assistance is available.
